You hike from Norway to Grövelsjön in Sweden along well-marked trails, cross lakes by boat and stay in everything from historic mountain cabins to comfortable hotels. The journey begins with a scenic train ride through Innlandet's deep forests and lake landscapes. Keep an eye out for moose along the way to Røros, one of Norway's best-preserved wooden towns and listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. After arrival, you have time to stroll among colorful wooden houses, cozy cafés and historic alleys that are often used as filming locations for movies and TV. A perfect introduction to the region's culture and history before the wilderness adventure begins.
The hiking follows marked mountain and forest trails through varied terrain. The surface can be rocky and uneven with some stream crossings. The days normally include 10–17 km of hiking and up to approximately 600 meters of elevation. The trip suits you with normal to good fitness who enjoys several days of hiking in a row and wants to experience wilderness without long or very steep climbs.
The trip combines several different types of accommodation. You stay the first and last nights at comfortable hotels and mountain lodges with private bathrooms, while the nights in Femundsmarka are spent in simpler mountain cabins with genuine atmosphere. There, shower and toilet are shared in separate service buildings.
