Hiking in Femundsmarka wilderness

6 days / 5 nights

5 Breakfasts, 5 Lunchboxes, 5 Dinners included

Day 1: Arrival to historic Røros

Dinner

The journey begins with a scenic train ride through Innlandet's deep forests and lake landscapes. Keep an eye out for moose along the way to Røros, one of Norway's best-preserved wooden towns and listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. After arrival, you have time to stroll among colorful wooden houses, cozy cafés and historic alleys that are often used as filming locations for movies and TV. A perfect introduction to the region's culture and history before the wilderness adventure begins.

Day 2: Hike along Femunden's western shore

16 km, 160 m up/down

Breakfast, lunchbox, dinner

After breakfast, the bus goes to Synnervika where the hike begins. The luggage is transported onward while you set out on the trails above Lake Femunden. Today's hike goes through gently rolling terrain with fine views over Norway's second largest natural lake. The area is characterized by pine forests, open heaths and a sense of stillness that quickly makes everyday life feel distant. In the afternoon, you reach Femundshytta, a historic place with origins from the copper mining era.

Day 3: Through the reindeer realm to Svukuriset

10-17 km, 160-200 m up/down

Breakfast, lunchbox, dinner

A short boat trip with the classic MS Fæmund II takes you to Haugen where today's hike starts. You can choose between a longer or shorter route. The longer trail goes through open mountain heaths and past Røvoltjønnan while the shorter one passes the old mountain farm Kuvolsætra. Regardless of route, magnificent views, solitary landscapes and good chances of seeing reindeer await. The evening is spent at the traditional mountain lodge Svukuriset.

Day 4: Climb Stor-Svuku or enjoy the mountain lodge

12 km, 570 m up/down

Breakfast, lunchbox, dinner

Today you choose your own pace. Relax in the genuine mountain environment or set out on a summit hike to Stor-Svuku, Femundsmarka's highest peak. The trail climbs steadily up through the mountain terrain and the reward is an extensive view over the entire national park. In clear weather, both Rondane and the Swedish mountains are visible on the horizon. After the hike, you return to Svukuriset for another evening in the heart of the wilderness.

Day 5: From Norway to Sweden on foot

16 km, 270 m up/down

Breakfast, lunchbox, dinner

Today's stage takes you through the borderland between Norway and Sweden. The hike goes past Lake Rønsjøen and through open mountain environments toward Sylen. From here, a beautiful boat trip across Grövelsjön to the Swedish side of the national park area awaits. If you want a bigger challenge, you can choose to hike all the way across the mountains instead. The evening is spent at STF Grövelsjön Fjällstation with comfortable accommodation and good food.

Day 6: Farewell to Femundsmarka wilderness

Breakfast, lunchbox

After breakfast, you leave the mountains behind you. Transfer takes you back to Elgå where you continue by bus toward Oslo. With your backpack filled with memories from grand views, quiet wilderness and encounters with both Norwegian and Swedish mountain nature, it's time to travel home or continue discovering Scandinavia on your own.
