Start with the three-layer principle

1. Moisture-wicking top closest to the body
2. Insulating layer such as fleece
3. Shell jacket against wet and wind

• Choose quick-drying functional materials such as synthetics or wool rather than cotton
• Always keep an extra layer in your backpack even if the sun is shining in the morning. The weather can change
• Make sure to try out and break in all equipment before the trip, especially the shoes

What to bring

• Passport, money, tickets and insurance documents
• Medications and contact lenses
• Mobile phone, charger and spare battery (navigation is usually done with your phone)
• Everyday clothes for the evenings
• Swimwear and a small towel
• Water bottle or water bladder of at least 1.5 liters
• Plate, mug, spork, pocket knife, thermos and sitting pad if a picnic lunch is planned
• Blister plasters or sports tape
• First aid kit
• Sunscreen and lip balm (especially in dry mountain air)
• Waterproof plastic bags for fragile items

Pack it right

• Put the most important things in your hand luggage when flying: passport, money, tickets, insurance documents, medications, contact lenses, a change of clothes, and your hiking or cycling gear. That way you can start your trip even if your bag is delayed.
• Pack light: remember that every kilo has to be carried for many hours. The rest of your luggage is left at the hotel or transported between accommodations.
