Mythical Ararat stands in eastern Turkey near the border with Armenia and Iran. The stunningly beautiful volcanic cone rises above the Anatolian plain and on certain days appears to float above the clouds. The 5164-meter high summit is clad in eternal snow and ice that stands in sharp contrast to the blue sky. Here Noah's ark is said to have run aground after the flood, but with or without biblical significance, the mountain radiates an enormous fascination.
This trip is a real expedition with mountain guide and a small group of 6-12 participants. Despite long ascents, thin air and cold nights, the trek is not technically difficult – what is primarily required is strong legs and the will to reach Turkey's roof.

Arrival at the airport in Van and transfer to the hotel. Our local guide introduces the trip and you meet the other participants. We are already at 1700 meters above sea level and will spend the first days gradually going higher to acclimatize to the altitude. Overnight at hotel in Van.
The ascent of Ararat is a real high-altitude mountaineering expedition. We reach over 5000 meters altitude, which means thinner air and cold nights. The trek requires good fitness, endurance and some experience with longer day hikes in alpine environments. Crampons are used on the glacier section to the summit, but no technical climbing moves occur. The guide provides the group with crampons, you only need to bring crampon-compatible boots. Neither ice axe, harness nor rope are used. Luggage is transported by horses, so you only carry a day pack. A detailed equipment list is sent out before departure.
During the summit ascent of Ararat we stay in two-person tents with full board. Local guide, cook and pack animals handle the logistics. Before and after the summit trip we stay comfortably in hotels in the cities, with breakfast included. Our guide is happy to recommend the best Turkish dinner experiences in the evenings.

The ascent of Ararat is counted among one of my life's greatest experiences. Tough but rewarding hike, not difficult but the air is thin and the days are long. The safety with the mountain guide and the brotherhood with the other summit hikers I remember with warmth.
