In northern Greece's Pindos Mountains lies Zagori – one of the country's most magnificent hiking regions. Here alpine plateaus, mountain lakes, deep gorges and small villages with cobblestone streets and stone bridges from the 1700s await. During the trip you reach the legendary Dragon Lake, spend a night in a mountain hut high up on the Astrakas plateau and discover villages like Papingo, Tsepelovo and Kipoi. Along the way you hike along the mighty Voidomatis river, see the Gamila and Astrakas peaks rise almost 2,500 meters above sea level and get views over Europe's deepest gorge, Vikos. This is a trip for you who want a good dose of mountain feeling, but also to get close to Zagori's traditional culture and hospitality.
Tip! Combine the trip with Hiking in the Heart of Greece - Vikos Gorge for a 12-day complete experience of Greece's most surprising environment.

The journey starts in the village of Megalo Papingo, high up in the Vikos Gorge and on the border of the high alpine area. From Ioannina (flight or bus) you take a taxi up through serpentine curves with views towards the mountains. Here you stay in a traditional stone house in the middle of the village. For dinner we recommend the region's traditional pies, often with wild herbs and feta cheese.
Tip: add an extra night and do a hike via the viewpoint Kokkino Lithari, Mikro Papingo and the natural pools Kolymbithres.
The difficulty level is medium to challenging. 5–7 hours of hiking per day and ascent 500–1400 m, some long descents. Terrain: trails and cobblestone paths (kalderimi), partly rocky and steep. Good hiking experience required, especially for the Astrakas plateau. Suitable for experienced hikers and families with older children (minimum age approx 12 years). Season: May–October. On the plateau snow may remain until June. July–August can be hot but shady forest sections provide coolness.
You stay in traditional stone houses and mansions from the 1700s–1800s, often with slate roofs, carved details and open fireplaces. At the Astrakas mountain hut the standard is simpler with dormitories, blankets and cold water – but also a genuine mountain experience.
