Zagori in the heart of northwestern Greece is an area that few know about, but here await fantastic hiking trails, exquisite local food and ancient stone houses in an outstanding environment. In many ways you meet the genuine Greece here, a country that consists of 80% mountains. On this trip, the Vikos Gorge plays the main role, Europe's deepest in relation to its width. The traditional mountain villages are scattered in a dramatic landscape with vertical cliffs and rushing rivers. The old cobblestone paths – kalderimia – have for hundreds of years connected the villages with a series of beautiful stone bridges.
The trip can be extended with Alpine Hiking in Greece - Zagori, to a total of 12 days of deep diving into the country's most unexpected environments.

After arrival in Ioannina (airport or bus station) you take a taxi up to Kipoi, one of Zagori's most picturesque villages. Here the beautiful stone bridges are the main attraction – built several hundred years ago to connect the villages when the rivers were impassable during winter. Each bridge bears the name of the benefactor or family who had it built.
Tip: Add an extra night in Kipoi and take an unforgettable trip from Vradeto (1450 m) to the viewpoint Beloi, where the entire Vikos Gorge opens up before you. From Vradeto you then descend the famous stone-paved Vradeto Steps, a winding zigzag path down to Kapesovo.
You mainly walk on marked trails and historic cobblestone paths (kalderimia). The terrain is hilly and partly steep, but the trails are well-trodden and in good condition. Length and elevation difference are indicated in the daily program. Several hikes go through forest areas with shade, which makes summer hiking possible if you start early in the day. At some viewpoints you come close to precipices, but it's always possible to keep your distance if you have vertigo.
You stay in small traditional hotels and guesthouses in Zagori's unique stone villages. The houses are built in local limestone, often with roofs of stone slabs, and several buildings date from the 16th and 17th centuries. All rooms have private bathrooms. Balconies are uncommon, but most accommodations have shaded terraces where you can enjoy a glass of wine before dinner consisting of local specialties.
