England offers many wonderful walks both by sea and mountains, like the coastal path in Cornwall and the famous Lake District. But if you long for something more unknown where you meet a genuine England, the coast of Cumbria and Lancashire is worth discovering. You'll even meet a king!
With Lake District peaks in the east and the Irish Sea in the west, you follow parts of the England Coast Path and Cistercian Way, between castles, monasteries and small communities. You stay at characterful hotels and combine walking, train and boat in a very British way. The tides, the history and the relaxed level make this a beautifully meditative walking experience where the details make the whole.

You arrive independently to Morecambe and check in at the iconic Midland Hotel, a landmark of British art deco with views over the vast Morecambe Bay. The award-winning promenade stretches along the water offering open views towards the Lake District mountains in the distance – perfect for a first walk after arrival. You can also discover the Tern Project, a series of art installations inspired by the bay's birdlife. The evening is free – dine at the hotel or try one of Morecambe's growing selection of better local restaurants. You then stay at the iconic The Midland Hotel, a restored 1930s art deco hotel with panoramic views over the bay.
The walks are moderately strenuous without large elevation differences or technical difficulties. The walking takes place on varied terrain such as coastal paths, gravel roads and minor roads. The daily stages are moderate and suit you with normal fitness.
You stay at a lovingly selected mix of smaller hotels and personal bed and breakfasts. The journey begins at a classic art deco hotel and continues with charming, local accommodations with good standards and personal character. On the week-long trip you can even stay at a castle. All serve a hearty breakfast and several can offer packed lunches.
