The Alentejo region is often compared to Tuscany and has been called by National Geographic "one of the world's best places to visit". Here vast landscapes stretch from the Spanish border to the Atlantic, with gently rolling hills, winding rivers and the iconic cork oak – Portugal's national tree. The region is also known for its black pigs, sheep and cattle, which play an important role in local life.
The hike begins in Évora, the UNESCO-listed whitewashed city that sits on a hill filled with charming city walls, churches and small shady squares – perfect for strolling, enjoying the atmosphere and soaking up the local life.
During the journey you delve into Alentejo's timeless landscape and rich history: the megaliths of Almendres and Monsaraz, the Roman temple in Évora and the 18th-century Ossa monastery. Along the way you encounter Moorish architecture, medieval castles and fortresses, and can cool off in the lakes Terena and Alqueva.
