When snow still remains on the peaks and the rapids thunder with meltwater, western Norway shows itself from its most magnificent side. This trip is perhaps at its most impressive in early summer but can be enjoyed throughout the summer season. The journey takes you to Årdal at the innermost part of Sognefjorden, where the mountains meet the water in a postcard landscape. During five days you explore the area in the best way, both on foot and from the kayak. You hike to the historic mountain farm Avdal, experience Vettisfossen – the Nordic region's highest free-falling waterfall – and paddle through calm fjord waters to secluded bays and valleys where few other visitors find their way. With local guides, good food and comfortable accommodation by the fjord, this is an active trip that's perfect for you who want to experience Norway when it's at its best.

The journey begins with a beautiful bus ride from Oslo to Årdalstangen at the innermost part of Sognefjorden. Already during the journey you pass valleys, rapids and mountain landscapes that give a foretaste of the coming days. After check-in, a walk along Årdalsvatnet is recommended to familiarize yourself with the surroundings and enjoy the view over the fjord and the high mountains that surround the place.
The hikes go on gravel roads, forest trails and occasionally rocky mountain paths. The daily stages are relatively short but contain several steep sections and some exposed parts. The kayak section requires no previous experience but you should feel comfortable on water. The kayak tour as well as one hike is led by a local guide. The trip suits you with normal to good fitness and some previous hiking experience.
You stay four nights at a pleasant hotel by the shore of Årdalsvatnet, at the innermost part of Sognefjorden. The hotel has a restaurant focusing on local ingredients and offers comfortable rooms in classic Norwegian style. We rate the accommodation as Comfort according to Epic Trails standard.
