Wine Cycling in Alsace

One of France's most charming areas is also an excellent cycling region, with a network of fine Véloroutes through a landscape that seems made to be discovered from the saddle. From Strasbourg you follow calm cycle paths and glittering canals southward to Colmar, before the famous wine route takes over. At the foot of the Vosges lie the wine villages in a row: Eguisheim, Kaysersberg, Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé, with half-timbered houses, medieval alleys and rolling vineyards. The trip blends well-known postcard scenes with lesser-known corners, Renaissance art and Romanesque churches with living traditions and French-German food culture. And then all the delicious wines, of course – Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Riesling. The cycling is mainly easy, and after about 280 kilometres you close the loop in Strasbourg.
