Burgundy is made to be discovered from the bicycle saddle. Among rolling vineyards lie small wine villages, medieval towns, castles, and monasteries, and on quiet minor roads and old railway paths you cycle through some of France's most famous wine regions. Here you encounter names like Pommard, Meursault, Montrachet, and Romanée-Conti, and of course Beaune, Burgundy's obvious wine capital. The trip comes in two versions:

Wine Cycling: Over 4 days you stay in Beaune the whole time and make three lovely day trips, focusing on the prestigious vineyards of Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. It's the concentrated option for those who above all want to experience Burgundy's wine country.

Greater Burgundy: Over 7 days you get more of Burgundy. After Beaune and Côte de Nuits, you continue south through Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise, along the Voie Verte to Cluny and further through Mâconnais to Tournus by the Saône. The vineyards are the common thread, but along the way castles, medieval villages, monasteries, and some of southern Burgundy's most beautiful landscapes also await.

Arrival in Beaune, Burgundy's obvious wine capital and an excellent starting point for the coming days' cycling. Once you have checked in and settled in, there is plenty of reason to head out and explore. The city's artistic and historical heritage is rich, with the magnificent Hôtel-Dieu, also known as Hospices de Beaune, as the main attraction. Also take the opportunity to visit the wine museum for an introduction to Burgundy's long and famous wine tradition.

This is easy to moderately challenging cycling in varied flat and more hilly terrain, where shorter hills alternate with pleasant rolling stretches. You mainly follow smaller, paved country roads with little traffic and can keep a comfortable pace through wine villages, fields, and rolling hills.
