Cycling in Burgundy

Arrival in Beaune, Burgundy's unmistakable wine capital. If you have some time to spare, you can take the opportunity to visit the city's artistic and historical heritage such as the impressive Hospices de Beaune.

This route crosses the well-known wine region Côte de Nuits. Here the vineyards are dominated by the Pinot Noir grape, from which the magnificent red Burgundy wine is made. You pass the world-famous Chateau Clos du Vougeot and will pass by the rolling vineyards that produce one of the world's most expensive wines: Romanée Conti.

A pleasant and relaxed journey through Côte de Beaune where prestigious white wines such as Meursault and Montrachet are made from the white Chardonnay grape. First you visit the historic Château Savigny-lès-Beaune. Then you cycle along famous wine villages such as Pommard, Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet to Santenay before reaching Chassey-le-Camp on the "Canal du Centre" cycle path.

Today you cycle along the "Voie Verte". An old railway track that leads you along rolling vineyards in the less prestigious wine region Côte Chalonnaise. Take time to visit "Rully Castle" or take a break with a local winemaker to taste some red Mercury. You then continue pedaling through the vineyards via the medieval town of Buxy, before reaching Saint-Boil where you will spend the night.

You continue along the "Voie Verte" and can admire the beautiful landscapes of southern Burgundy. The treasures you find along the way include Chateau de Cormatin and its gardens, unique in France for its exceptionally well-preserved interiors from Louis XIII's reign (1628). You end in the beautiful town of Cluny, known for its outstanding city walls and the Roman monastery founded in the 10th century.

Quite quickly the terrain becomes somewhat hilly and you reach Europe's longest pedestrian tunnel. You pass the majestic fortress Berzé-le-Châtel. You cross the beautiful Saint Laurent bridge and follow the "La Voie Bleue" route. You pass charming villages built around the typically Romanesque churches and eventually reach medieval Tournus.

A wonderful cycling experience in the spirit of food and wine ends in Tournus after breakfast.
