At the beginning of the second millennium, a large number of pilgrims began passing through Europe in search of the lost kingdom of heaven - "Patria Celeste". The pilgrims set off towards Jerusalem, Santiago and of course Rome, the eternal city and heart of Christianity. Via Francigena was used for 700 years by emperors, plebeians and priests and was probably the most important road of the time.
On this first part on the Italian peninsula, you walk through alpine Valle d'Aosta. The trails wind among vineyards and fruit orchards surrounded by high mountains. The river Evançon follows you faithfully and the pleasant communities become grateful stops. This is a historically meaningful route that long before our time stood for communication between different cultures.












Admire the magnificent Verrès castle with its two-meter thick walls.
Hike through picturesque villages like Etroubles, known for their charming atmosphere.
See the beautiful Évançon river winding through the valley.
Experience the rich history found in Aosta, a city full of Roman ruins.

The walks are of moderate character, mostly along trails and gravel roads at a comfortable pace. The route is experienced as relatively easy thanks to small elevation differences, with some shorter steeper sections. Some stages are longer but can be shortened with local buses. The trails are usually well-marked.
At 2 - 3 star hotels or equivalent agriturismo, selected for comfort and coziness after the day's walk. All accommodations have toilet/shower/bath in the room. Breakfast is included every morning and provides a good start, welcome dinner is included.
