With the Alps as a dramatic backdrop, Italy's lakes offer one of the country's most romantic settings. Here, glittering waters, elegant villas and magnificent botanical gardens come together. On this trip you hike along the most beautiful trails at Lake Como and Lake Maggiore.
First you explore Lake Como, "the pearl among Italy's lakes", with famous villas such as Carlotta, Balbianello and Melzi. Then Lake Maggiore awaits with its fairytale Borromean Islands, stately hotels in Stresa and the picturesque villages of Cannero and Cannobio. The hikes go through olive groves, vineyards and small mountain villages – a paradise for those who want to experience lush nature and authentic Italian charm.

The journey to Lenno goes first to Como and then by boat. From the boat pier it's a 15-minute walk to the hotel which gives you an opportunity to soak up the atmosphere and perhaps stop for an espresso. The small beach also invites you for a dip. If you arrive early, a visit to Villa Balbianello (not included) is recommended, a romantic 18th-century villa that has also been a filming location for Star Wars and Casino Royale.
Level & Standard
Both Lake Como and Lake Maggiore are surrounded by beautiful hiking trails that run both along the water and through the surrounding mountains. These are generally fine paths with good soil and very little stone and debris.
You can choose between Standard and Comfort accommodation. Standard provides simple but functional accommodation in a guesthouse, a B&B and a 2-star hotel. Comfort includes a 4-star hotel with pool in Lenno as well as two pleasant 3-star hotels in Cannobio and Stresa. Breakfast is served at all locations for a good start to the day. In most cases, only the 4-star hotels have air conditioning.
