Hiking in Transylvania & the Carpathians

Piatra Craiului, the Bucegi Mountains and Bran Castle

The Carpathians are green, wild, and perfect for a different kind of mountain experience. On this hike, you discover two of Romania's finest mountain areas: Piatra Craiului and Bucegi. At the same time, you get a thorough insight into Romanian culture. The trails lead through deep forests, limestone ravines, and high pastures where shepherds still herd their sheep and make cheese according to old traditions. You hike between small mountain villages, pass mountain huts, and reach passes up to 2,000 meters high. Bran, with its legendary Dracula Castle, provides a dose of Transylvanian history and myth. The accommodations are simple and personal, a good dinner awaits every evening, and your luggage travels by car while you hike light.

Program

Select Your Program Variation:

7 Breakfasts, 6 Lunchboxes and 7 Dinners included

Dinner

The trip begins at Bucharest's North Railway Station, where you board the train toward Transylvania and Brasov. The standard departure is around 3 pm (let us know your flight times), and the train journey takes just under three hours. From Brasov you continue by private transfer for about an hour up into the mountains to your guesthouse in Piatra Craiului National Park. Here the bustle of the capital gives way to forest, mountains, and fresh air. The first dinner, with local flavours, awaits at the accommodation, and then it's just a matter of recharging your batteries before tomorrow's first hike.

Level and standard

Medium-tough mountain hiking for those with normal to good fitness. The days vary between level 3 and 4 on our scale, and distance and elevation are specified in the program. You walk on trails, forest roads, mountain ridges, and pastures with some steeper sections. Several days offer shorter or longer alternatives.

Accommodation

For this trip we choose small, local guesthouses and mountain accommodations where a personal atmosphere and the location right in the heart of the Carpathians matter more than hotel stars. At one of the overnight stays, the bathroom may be shared with other guests. Simple, genuine comfort that suits the rural and mountainous character of the trip. Full board is included with breakfast, packed lunch, and dinner.
