France's quirky northwestern peninsula is like a country within a country. It's perhaps best known for being the setting of the comic character Asterix's village, and of course for Mont Saint Michel's fairytale and tide-surrounded castle island. But the Emerald Coast is more than that. Here you cycle over black granite, past thatched houses with the emerald green sea at your side and stop at fragrant crêperies. The landscape fascinates as do the Celtic place names. The journey continues along the Rance to picturesque Dinan and the pirate's nest Saint Malo.
A really nice opportunity exists to take the boat over to the English flower island Jersey for wonderful cycling on fine cycle paths. Here another fictional character has put the place on the map: TV detective Bergerac. The gourmet gets their fill with the sea's delicacies: fresh fish, mussels and oysters.
