Prepare yourself for beautiful coastal and countryside views as you cross England by bicycle. The route closely follows the Roman frontier from Emperor Hadrian's time (117–138 AD) and reflects the Roman presence in the area – from the ancient baths in Ravenglass on the Cumbrian coast to Tynemouth by the North Sea. Along the way you pass Solway Firth and cycle over the place where Hadrian's Wall ends in Bowness-on-Solway, before the route turns eastward towards Eden Valley and its more hilly terrain towards the River Tyne. From Carlisle you can visit Roman forts, museums, charming villages and lively market towns – all part of a World Heritage site. The cycling also takes you through historic cities like Carlisle, Hexham and Haltwhistle, where many buildings during medieval times were built with stone from the wall itself. The route is well marked and runs mainly on minor roads and old railway lines. There are shorter sections with gravel, but most is paved. The nature along the way is dramatic and magnificent – a journey filled with both history and scenic cycling.
