On this trip you combine hiking along Scotland's most famous hiking trail West Highland Way with one of the world's best train journeys on a discovery journey through the western highlands. You board the train in Glasgow which first takes you west along the coastline before turning north through mountain passes and along Loch Lomond to Ardlui. You take the ferry across the lake to begin your hike along the West Highland Way up to Crianlarich. The train takes you further across the wild landscape of Rannoch Moor to Spean Bridge from where you continue hiking to Fort William just below Britain's highest mountain Ben Nevis. The next part of the journey takes you back in history as you board ''The Jacobite'', the steam train known from the Harry Potter films among others, which takes you via the Glenfinnan Viaduct to the silvery sandy beaches on the west coast. You stay seven nights at selected hotels and guesthouses where a hearty breakfast is included every morning. Train tickets in second class are included.
Tip: book well in advance as the West Highland Way is popular.
NOTE - Bookings for "The Jacobite Train" are closed until further notice, see more information HERE. We will instead offer the same journey with Scotrail, a price reduction will be made on the booking.

Arrival at Glasgow Queen Street train station where you board the West Highland Line to Ardlui. You travel along the River Clyde, pass the coastal town of Helensburgh before reaching Loch Lomond. The train arrives in Ardlui where you can enjoy the lake shores and look north towards the peaks that will accompany you over the coming days along the West Highland Way.
Accommodation in Ardlui
The hikes are easy to moderate along well-marked hiking trails. The terrain can be uneven underfoot over rolling landscape but contains nothing too strenuous. One day offers a choice between a more challenging tour and a shorter, calmer route for flexibility.
Charming bed & breakfasts, guesthouses and smaller hotels with a homely atmosphere. A hearty breakfast is served every morning. Packed lunches can usually be ordered from the accommodation and dinner can be eaten at nearby pubs or restaurants, often within short walking distance.
