Cape Verde offers an island-hopping hiking trip you won't soon forget. You start in charming Mindelo, the cultural heart of the island of São Vicente, before crossing the strait to Santo Antão – a true hiking island of deep green valleys, terraced farmland and small villages nestled between dramatic basalt walls. Here you hike along coastal paths and over mountain ridges where village life and nature's rhythm go hand in hand. The trip's finale takes you via a night on Santiago to Fogo, a black volcanic island where Pico Grande rises from a moonscape of lava and ash fields. It's four islands and four distinct worlds – but with the same warm hospitality and timeless atmosphere that makes Cape Verde so special.
Tip! Book an extension on the neighboring island of Sal for swimming and relaxation after the hiking trip.

You arrive in Mindelo on the island of Saõ Vicente and are transferred to your accommodation. The rest of the day is free to soak up the atmosphere – the colonial architecture, the pastel-coloured harbour and the musical pulse make the town a perfect starting point. There is the option of a half-day excursion in Mindelo or to the Calhau coast.
Guided city walk in Mindelo (half-day, optional)
To really get a feel for local life, we recommend a city tour with an English-speaking local guide through Mindelo's lively centre. You visit the colourful market hall and fish market, stroll through the narrow alleys and central squares, and follow the elegant bay lined with palm trees. Mindelo was founded by the British in the midst of an inhospitable environment, but developed into a pleasant coastal town with pastel-coloured houses and shady little squares. The atmosphere is warm, relaxed and full of that slow, musical calm the town is known for.
The hike is moderate to challenging. The environments vary from forested mountain ridges to coastal paths and steep valleys with large differences in elevation. The days are not extremely long, but the terrain is often rocky, narrow and hilly, with several stages of over 1000 meters of elevation gain/loss. You should have good hiking experience and be comfortable with steep passages and heat.
The accommodations vary between small family-run guesthouses, simple lodges in the countryside and charming smaller hotels. All are carefully selected for their location, personal style and genuinely Cape Verdean atmosphere. In several places you stay in the middle of nature or in small villages, while Mindelo and São Filipe offer more life and culture close at hand.
