São Tomé is a volcanic island in the Atlantic painted in overwhelming colors and scents. This new and content-rich hiking destination is for the curious traveler in you, and we make it easily accessible with a local guide. Nature dominates with empty black and golden sandy beaches, lush tropical greenery, and shaded trails leading up to volcanic peaks and down to rivers. As you hike through the primeval forest, over historic cocoa plantations, and along untouched beaches, it often feels like traveling back to a time when the world was wild, mysterious, and wonderfully unexplored.
Throughout the trip, you have your own driver and guide who ensures everything runs smoothly and safely, while also providing invaluable insight into local life. Expect many interesting encounters with the friendly São Toméans and an active travel experience you will not soon forget.

You land on São Tomé and are greeted by the warmth, scents, and lush greenery. A short transfer takes you north to Mucumbli Lodge, which sits high above the sea, surrounded by dense vegetation and colorful birds. The adventure has begun! Here there's a trail that leads down to a peaceful beach – perfect for a first encounter with the island.
We recommend an extra night at the beginning of the trip to settle in after the journey before the hiking begins.
The hikes are of a medium level with about 10 km and 400 meters of elevation gain per day on varied terrain. Heat and humidity make it more strenuous than the numbers suggest. The trails are usually clear but can be muddy after rain, so choose shoes or boots with good grip. You should have good basic fitness and be comfortable on hilly terrain. Your private guide leads the hikes at your pace and in full safety.
You stay at small, locally owned eco-lodges and guesthouses with simple to good standards, often in nature-close locations. The accommodations are alternately beautifully located by the sea, in lush mountain surroundings, on a historic plantation, and in the capital. The rooms have private bathrooms and convey a strong experience where the atmosphere is local, personal, and genuine. Many opportunities are given to try the local food. We recommend that you book a couple of extra nights before, during, and after the trip, to settle in after the flight and have time to relax. The extra days can be spent with or without a local guide.
