One of Africa's unknown hiking paradises is the island of Santo Antão in the island nation of Cape Verde. On this trip we have selected slightly calmer hikes that suit most people. You start in colorful Mindelo on the island of São Vicente before taking the ferry over to Santo Antão, where deep valleys, dramatic coastal cliffs and terraced cultivation await. You stay at small, personal guesthouses, often with pools, among banana plantations, sugar cane and mountains. The hiking days are relatively short and provide plenty of time for breaks, photos and spontaneous meetings with the often so lovely local population. The finish in the small fishing village of Tarrafal offers black lava beach, boats pulled up on the sand and lovely swims in the Atlantic. A perfect introduction to Cape Verde for those who want moderately challenging hikes, lots of atmosphere and several free moments.
Tip! Book an extension on neighboring island Sal for swimming and relaxation after the hiking trip.

You land on São Vicente and are transferred to your accommodation in Mindelo, Cape Verde's cultural heart. Here awaits colonial architecture, music streaming from the bars and the relaxed and welcoming feeling called morabeza in Creole. The rest of the day is free for a first stroll along the bay, a drink at a café or just rest after the journey. There's an opportunity to book a short excursion in the nearby area or a guided tour.
Guided city walk in Mindelo (half day, optional)
To really get an insight into the local life, we can recommend a city tour with an English-speaking local guide through Mindelo's lively center. You visit the colorful market hall and fish market, stroll through the narrow alleys and central squares, and follow the elegant bay lined with palm trees. Mindelo was founded by the British in the middle of an inhospitable environment, but developed into a pleasant coastal town with pastel-colored houses and shady small squares. The atmosphere is warm, relaxed and filled with that slow, musical calm the city is known for.
Compared to other programs on Santo Antão, the hikes are shorter and easier without missing the best areas. The trails are in good condition and the surface consists of stone-paved paths, village roads and trails. The elevation differences are moderate but some days the path goes through steep terrain, especially along the coastal trail where there are narrow sections and open to the sea. You should be comfortable walking in hilly terrain and have normal fitness.
You stay at small, charming guesthouses and pensions that reflect Cape Verde's everyday life: a personal boutique hotel in Mindelo, lush accommodations with pools in Ribeira da Torre and Ponta do Sol, and a simple but atmospheric guesthouse in Tarrafal, just a short walk from the sea. The standard is comfortable but not luxurious, with focus on location, views and the feeling of really living in the environments you hike in.
