Few places we have visited have lingered so long in our hearts as Brittany. This stubborn corner of France, shaped by Celtic heritage and home to Asterix himself, displays an enchanting coast. The pink granite around one of France's most beautiful villages Ploumanac'h glows as you follow the French people's own favorite trail GR43, Sentier des douaniers. The extreme tides rhythmically change the landscape and the oyster farms make your mouth water. Do taste them with a glass of dry Breton cider after the hike. The salt-sprayed fishing villages conspire with the wild and free coast to create a wonderful feeling of French coastal magic.
You can choose between a full week that covers the entire stretch between Paimpol and Perros-Guirec, or a shorter variant with the pink granite coast at Perros-Guirec. Both variants can be extended with extra nights and boat excursion to the Seven Islands.

Follow the easy-going and historic GR34 Sentier des douaniers

The journey begins in the historic harbor town of Paimpol, where fishing boats and sailing yachts share the bay. If you arrive in the morning, you can head out directly on a first hike along the GR34, called Sentier des douaniers after the customs officers who patrolled here hunting for smugglers, to the beautiful ruins of Beauport Abbey from the 13th century. The monastery is surrounded by gardens and sea views, and those who wish can extend the hike to an oyster bar for seafood tapas and wine by the water. What a start! If you arrive later, you can book an extra night to catch the lovely hike to Beauport.
The hikes follow well-marked coastal paths on mostly easy-going trails. The stages are 10–20 km per day, with moderate ascents and good surfaces. You walk on a mixture of cliffs, forest paths and sandy trails, sometimes with small steep sections. Suitable for those with normal fitness.
In our Brittany there are no large hotels. Instead you stay at small, authentic hotels and guesthouses along the coast – often family-owned and always close to the sea. Many rooms have views over the harbor or beach, and breakfast is served with freshly baked bread, local butter and steaming coffee. Here prevails that relaxed Breton atmosphere that makes you immediately feel at home. You can choose between three different accommodation standards: Standard, Comfort or Charm.
