To walk through the Loire Valley is to move through France's history at a leisurely pace. Here you follow the Loire River's gentle course between royal castles, vineyards and living small towns, in a landscape shaped by both nature and humans in beautiful harmony.
The walk goes from elegant Amboise to charming Saumur and offers an unusually fine combination of accessible walking, cultural experiences and French joie de vivre. During the days you move through wine villages like Montlouis and Vouvray, along riverbanks, over open slopes and past troglodytic dwellings carved into the limestone. Evenings are spent in historic towns with good food, local wines and a relaxed atmosphere.
This is a trip for you who want to walk without stress, with time for castles, monasteries, wine and everyday life – and experience the Loire Valley exactly as peacefully and atmospherically as it deserves.

You travel on your own to Amboise, a charming town known for its royal castle Château Royal d'Amboise and Clos Lucé, where Leonardo da Vinci spent his final years. Amboise is a pleasant and lively small town with a very central location in the Loire Valley, making it a perfect base for excursions to nearby places like Blois, Chenonceau and Tours.
We highly recommend adding an extra night here to explore the surroundings at your leisure, for example the magnificent Château de Chambord near Blois or Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire, known for its international garden festival. Alternatively, you can arrive early, leave your luggage at the hotel and take a half-day excursion to Château de Chenonceau by taxi or public transport. The castle visit itself usually takes between two and four hours.
This is a relatively easy walking trip that suits you with normal fitness. The walks go on well-marked trails, gravel roads and smaller country roads, often along the Loire River or through gently rolling wine landscapes. The elevation differences are moderate but the stages are quite substantial with 17-22 km per day. You choose the pace yourself and the trip is well suited for you who want to combine moderate physical activity with culture, wine and authentically French environments.
During the trip you stay at personal and carefully selected hotels with good locations along the route. In Amboise you stay at Hotel Bellevue by the Loire River, with views towards the royal castle. In Montlouis-sur-Loire, Hôtel Le Montloire awaits, a modern hotel with a central location in the wine village. In Tours you stay at Hotel Mirabeau, close to both the station and the city's historic center, and in Villandry you overnight at the charming Hotel Le Cheval Rouge, right next to the castle and its gardens. All hotels have private bathrooms and breakfast is included every morning. NOTE other, equivalent hotels may occur.
