Alsace is made for hiking. One moment you're walking between neat vineyards and half-timbered houses in some of France's most beautiful villages, the next climbing up through the forests towards the heights of the Vosges. Along the way, medieval castles appear on sandstone cliffs with views over the Alsace plain and all the way to the Black Forest. The trip starts in fairy-tale Eguisheim and takes you onward to Turckheim, Kaysersberg, and Munster, among others. There are also plenty of good reasons to stop: local wines, farm inns, and the famous Munster cheese. Well-marked trails, comfortable hotels, and luggage transport make it easy to focus on what matters – the hiking, the views, and Alsace.

Welcome to Eguisheim, one of the most characterful villages along the Alsace wine route. The small medieval village lies just eight kilometres from Colmar, surrounded by vineyards and with three castles on the hills above. Here, narrow lanes wind between colourful half-timbered houses, flower-adorned facades and small wine cellars. Check in at the hotel and use the rest of the day for a first stroll through the village. This is Alsace exactly as you'd want it to look – and a very pleasant place to lace up your hiking boots ahead of the week.
Level and standard
Moderately demanding hike on fine, well-marked trails through vineyards, forests, and the hilly mountain terrain of the Vosges. Depending on the itinerary, you hike on average about 13–17 km and 500–740 meters of elevation gain per hiking day. One stage is longer and higher but can be shortened by taxi or train. Suitable for you with good basic fitness and experience with longer walks or hiking.
You stay in comfortable 3- and 4-star hotels in the charming small towns and villages along the route. The standard is consistently good and is well suited for recovery after hiking. Breakfast is included every morning, and your luggage is transported ahead when you change accommodation. There are plenty of restaurants nearby. The exact hotels may vary between departures.
