Perigord Noir is an area where time seems to stand still. Here await prehistoric caves and Stone Age settlements, medieval villages, walled towns and castles that majestically overlook the valleys. Monasteries and Romanesque churches add further depth to a landscape where nature, history and culture meet in an unforgettable symphony.
The area stretches between the Vézère valley in the west and the Dordogne in the south, and is named after the dark, evergreen oaks that adorn almost half of the forest land. The fertile soil provides truffles, nuts, mushrooms and tobacco in abundance, while geese and ducks create world-famous delicacies such as fois gras, magret and confit. At the lively, colorful markets in Sarlat you can mingle with the locals and enjoy the region's specialties – preferably together with a glass of full-bodied Bergerac wine.
