One of Africa's unknown hiking paradises is the island of Santo Antão in the island nation of Cape Verde. On this trip you get to experience all the island's treasures on foot: from dramatic volcanic formations to lush valleys that flourish with bananas, yams and exotic fruit in the cooling trade winds. The nature is extraordinary and completely different from the more well-known sun and beach islands further east. Along fine trails in the Cova crater, Paul valley and on the north coast you meet the hospitable local population and their colorful Creole culture. The highlights are many, from genuine accommodations to lunch at home with locals. The trip starts and ends on the neighboring island of São Vicente with the cultural center Mindelo.
Tip! Book an extension on the neighboring island Sal for swimming and relaxation after the hiking trip.

Upon arrival at São Vicente island, you will be met at the airport and driven to your accommodation in Mindelo, Cape Verde's cultural heart. Take a walk through the colonial city center or along the palm-lined bay, chat with the hospitable locals and soak up the colorful atmosphere. If you arrive in the morning or have chosen extra nights in Mindelo, you can add an initial hiking tour to Calhau or a guided city walk in Mindelo.
Guided city walk in Mindelo (half day, optional)
To truly get an insight into local life, we can recommend a city tour with an English-speaking local guide through Mindelo's vibrant center. You visit the colorful market hall and fish market, stroll through the narrow alleys and central squares, and follow the elegant bay lined with palm trees. Mindelo was founded by the British in the middle of an inhospitable environment, but developed into a pleasant coastal town with pastel-colored houses and shady small squares. The atmosphere is warm, relaxed and filled with that slow, musical calm the city is known for.
The hikes are medium to challenging with several long ascents. The surface varies between stone-paved paths and dirt trails. The trails are generally well maintained as they are still used daily by the local population. You should have good hiking experience and be comfortable with steep passages and heat.
You stay at small, genuine guesthouses and small-scale hotels with pools on Santo Antão, often surrounded by lush valleys and terraces. In Mindelo and Ponta do Sol you stay close to small-town life and the sea. The accommodations are charming, local and simple to medium standard with focus on location, views and a welcoming atmosphere.
