Behind the beaches of Costa Blanca awaits an entirely different Spain. In the Sierra de Mariola natural park, you hike through pine and oak forests, olive groves, almond plantations, and a mountain landscape filled with babbling springs and aromatic herbs. The journey begins in medieval Bocairent and continues via the small mountain village of Agres to Alcoi. Along the way you encounter Iberian remains, old farmsteads, and the impressive stone-built snow houses that once supplied the region with ice. On the last day of hiking you approach the 1,390-meter-high Montcabrer before the trail winds its way down through the dramatic ravine of Barranc del Cinc. An unknown and surprising hiking country – just a short distance from Alicante and Valencia.

Welcome to Bocairent, one of those places that makes you wonder why you haven't heard of it before. The medieval town lies dramatically on a cliff by the Sierra de Mariola and is a maze of narrow, winding, and largely car-free alleys. Take a walk through the old town centre and look out for traces of the various cultures that have left their mark on the area through the centuries. There are also plenty of bars, cafés and restaurants where you can begin the week with the local cuisine.
Level and standard
Moderately demanding mountain hiking for those with normal to good fitness and experience walking in hilly terrain. The five hiking days are, in the basic version, level 3 with an average of 13 km and just over 600 meters of ascent per day. The longer alternatives are level 4 with distances of 16–17 km and just over 900 meters of ascent.
You stay in a personal mix of 3-4-star hotels as well as guesthouses and inns with 2-3 stars. As usual, the accommodations are chosen for comfort and a good location along the route.
