On the southwestern slope of the Sierra Nevada lies Alpujarras, which still bears traces of the Moorish period. Here, at the foot of Mainland Spain's highest mountain, Mulhacén, lie charming whitewashed villages, "Pueblos Blancos", built on steep slopes. Everywhere, olives, lemons, almonds, figs and grapes grow and thrive against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks. You walk in the borderland between cultivated landscape and alpine terrain, staying at small, cosy family-run hotels. The whole experience is genuine, imaginative and satisfying as you move between the present and history, small villages and great mountains.

Arrival in Capileira, situated at an altitude of 1436m. This beautiful Alpujarras village still displays its charming history as a former Moorish settlement: whitewashed houses clinging to the slope, small squares with fountains, and a mysterious network of steep, narrow alleys.
Accommodation in Capileira
Level and standard
Moderately challenging hiking along well-marked trails through dramatic valleys and white villages, with daily stages of about 4-7 hours. Some days offer longer climbs and more hilly terrain, and from Mecina and Trevélez there are optional alternatives for different energy levels.
Small, family-run hotels in typical 'pueblos blancos' with a warm atmosphere and personal service. All rooms have their own shower and toilet for comfortable recovery after the day's hike. Breakfast is included every morning, and dinner is served on three evenings during the trip.
