Hiking in Serra de Mariola

You arrive in Bocairent, a town in the Sierra de Mariola Natural Park (Mariola mountain range); an enchanting, medieval town perched on a rocky ledge that will captivate you with its breathtaking views and its narrow, winding, traffic-free streets.

When you leave Bocairent you head towards the Sierra de Mariola. You walk towards the source of the Vinalopó River and pass fountains and historic farmhouses that were once inhabited by families who worked the land. Here you are surrounded by impressive, ancient holm oaks. When you reach Toll Blau (the blue pool) you can cool off in crystal-clear water. Then you pass Font de la Coveta, a spring with crystalline water that is the source of the important Vinalopó River.

Today you leave Bocairent to enter the Sierra de Mariola Natural Park, where you can enjoy impressive views and the tranquility with which this idyllic place surrounds you. You will pass the Iberian village "Cabeçó de Mariola", a mysterious place with spectacular views, once inhabited by our ancestors. Continuing on you will reach Alfafara, a small village where you can have some refreshments and visit an old washhouse, whose clear but ice-cold water is still used by the local population. Finally a beautiful road will lead you into Agres where you will spend the night.

Agres is a charming mountain village with steep streets, clear and fresh water fountains and a beautiful monastery that watches over the town from the highest point. Today's hike follows the botanical path Teixera d' Agres in the Sierra de Mariola. As we always say, Mariola never leaves anyone indifferent, it is one of the mountain ranges most closely connected to Valencian collective tradition.

You leave Agres and go back into the natural park to see the enormous, impressive structures called "Cavas". Between the 1500s and 1800s, a period known as the "little ice age", the weather was colder with much more snow than we see nowadays. They provide the most fascinating archaeological evidence of previous economic exploitation of Mediterranean mountains. Until the 1800s, "Cavas" were functional constructions, ice houses, built to preserve and store the snow collected during winter and used as centers to distribute it year-round.

The alpine character of the final stage will surprise you. You set out on a lush trail that takes you to Mariola's shelter. From there you can contemplate the majesty of Montcabrer's peak. On a clear day you can see all the way to Ibiza. You follow Coll de Sebata, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view over the surrounding valleys. Finally you enter Barranc del Cinc, a deep mountain pass with spectacular cliff sides, which leads you to the town of Alcoi.
