Madeira is an island filled with contrasts, and this hiking trip lets you experience everything from dramatic mountains to subtropical coasts. Here volcanic peaks rise above the Atlantic, green valleys lead down to glittering seas, and the landscape changes in just a few hours of hiking.
You hike along coastal levadas, through banana plantations, sugar cane and terraced fields, onwards to small colonial villages. The tour takes you through the Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site, past waterfalls, over open plateaus and up to the island's highest peaks at over 1800 meters. This Madeira program offers hiking every day, with a mix of classic must-sees and some more unknown trails.
Tip! Book extension on neighboring island Porto Santo for swimming and relaxation after the trip.

Welcome at the airport and taxi transfer to Machico, the first town founded on Madeira and the former capital of the island. Today it is a small and peaceful seaside resort. Depending on your arrival time, you are welcome to stroll around the village and walk along the waterfront promenade.
Level and standard
The hikes offer varied character, from easier stages to more challenging ones, along levadas (irrigation channels) and well-marked trails. The program combines coastal path at Boca do Risco, a summit hike to the island's highest mountain Pico Ruivo as well as hiking along levadas and on the São Lourenço peninsula for nice variation.
Accommodation
You can choose between two accommodation options, standard or comfort, breakfast is included every day. Standard means hotels or B&Bs with 2-3* standard. Comfort offers 4* hotels with higher comfort. A simple, smooth arrangement that provides pleasant recovery after the day's hike.
