One of Africa's undiscovered hiking paradises is the island of Santo Antão in the Cape Verde archipelago. On this trip, we've selected somewhat gentler hikes that suit most people. You start in colorful Mindelo on the island of São Vicente before taking the ferry across to Santo Antão, where deep valleys, dramatic coastal cliffs and terraced farmland await. You'll stay in small, personal guesthouses, often with a pool, amid banana plants, sugar cane and mountains. The hiking days are relatively short, leaving plenty of time for breaks, photos and spontaneous encounters with the often so amiable local population. The finale in the small fishing village of Tarrafal offers a black lava beach, boats pulled up onto the sand and lovely swims in the Atlantic. A perfect introduction to Cape Verde for those who want moderately challenging hikes, lots of atmosphere and plenty of free time.
Tip! Book an extension on the neighboring island of Sal for swimming and relaxation after the hiking trip.

Hikes in the lush Ribeira da Torre with terraces and coffee plantations
The beautiful coastal path between Fontainhas, Corvo and Formiguinhas
Final days by the sea in the quiet fishing village of Tarrafal
Genuine accommodations in green valleys and local food
The colonial town's music scene and markets in colorful Mindelo
Compared to other programs on Santo Antão, the hikes are shorter and easier without missing out on the best areas. The trails are in good condition, and the terrain consists of paved paths, village roads and trails. The elevation differences are moderate, but on some days the trail goes through steep terrain, especially along the coastal path where there are narrow sections open to the sea. You should feel confident walking on hilly terrain and have normal fitness.
You'll stay in small, charming guesthouses and inns that reflect Cape Verdean everyday life: a personal boutique hotel in Mindelo, lush accommodations with pools in Ribeira da Torre and Ponta do Sol, and a simple but atmospheric guesthouse in Tarrafal, just a short walk from the sea. The standard is comfortable but not luxurious, with a focus on location, view, and the feeling of truly living in the midst of the environments you're hiking through.
