Walking Via Francigena - Orvieto to Rome

Of several pilgrimage routes that cross Italy with the eternal city of Rome as their destination, Via Francigena is the most famous, the route that links Canterbury with the heart of Christianity. In Italy, the route passes through several regions from the San Bernardo pass in Valle d'Aosta via Lazio to Rome.

This final section takes you through the Lazio region to the very destination in the Vatican in Rome. Like ancient pilgrims, you pass the charming lakeside town of Bolsena, known for the Corpus Domini miracle of 1236, wine's Montefiascone (Est! Est! Est!), papal favorite Viterbo and the noteworthy Orvieto. Through chestnut forests and open landscapes and past small chapels, you finally reach Via Trionfale which takes you to the heart of Rome.
