If Umbria is a more genuine version of Tuscany, its southwestern parts are the most authentic part of all. Between well-preserved medieval villages and picturesque hills, you get to experience what has made Italy's heart so famous, without tourists.
The journey begins in Etruscan Orvieto and follows the trail Cammino dei Borghi Silenti, the path of silent villages, through the Amerini mountains. You stay at family-owned places with many opportunities to enjoy homemade food. A trip for the Italy lover who longs to return to when the country was more undiscovered and every encounter a surprise.

The journey begins in Orvieto, one of Umbria's most fascinating cities, beautifully situated on a vertical cliff of golden tufa stone. If you arrive early, a walk through the historic center is recommended – past craft shops, wine cellars and the spectacular cathedral Duomo di Orvieto, with its mosaics and sculptures gleaming in the afternoon light. The evening offers optional dinner and a first taste of the region's wines and naturally gentle pace.
Level & standard
The hikes are moderately difficult and fill the days nicely. However, the ascents come gradually and suit most people who have hiked in hilly terrain before. The trails are well-marked and the surface varies between nature trails and gravel roads. The peaceful landscape invites a calm pace.
Our idea with the accommodations is that they should enhance the feeling of genuine Umbria. You stay at hand-picked agriturismi, B&Bs and small family-run guesthouses where hospitality is at the center. All rooms have private bathrooms and the trip offers a warm welcome, genuine local food and personal contact with the area's people and culture.
