Of several pilgrim routes that cross Italy with the eternal city Rome as destination, Via Francigena is the most famous, the route that links Canterbury with the heart of Christianity. In Italy, the route passes through several regions from the San Bernardo pass in Valle d´Aosta via Lazio to Rome.
This section goes through Tuscany and starts in the beautiful city of Lucca. Your walk then continues in Val d´Elsa through a landscape where small towns with narrow alleys and sandstone facades still give a medieval character to the atmosphere.
Like the pilgrims, you stay overnight in famous San Gimignano with its 13 towers and the walled Monteriggioni. As you begin to approach Siena, the hilly and rolling landscape in Crete Senesi is very beautiful, and the finish takes place on Siena's shell-shaped square.

Explore the medieval city center of Lucca with its impressive city walls.
Discover the picturesque streets of San Gimignano, known for its 13 towers.

The walks are generally easy, mostly along well-marked trails and gravel roads through gently rolling landscape. Generally no major elevation differences, but a longer and more hilly stage early in the week, between San Miniato Alto and Gambassi, may feel more demanding.
You stay at 3-star hotels or equivalent guesthouses and agriturismi, always with private bathroom in the room. Breakfast is included every morning and one dinner on day 3. Comfortable, well-maintained accommodations that let you focus on the walking and enjoy the days.
