Walking Via Francigena - Lucca to Siena

Arrival in Lucca and check-in at your hotel. Explore the city, its gardens, majestic bell towers and impressive Piazza Anfiteatro, a Roman amphitheater from the 2nd century.

After breakfast you have the opportunity to continue your tour of Lucca and visit San Martino Cathedral to see the famous wooden crucifix Volto Santo (holy face). In the afternoon you take the local train to Fucecchio where you will be picked up and driven to your accommodation in San Miniato Alto.

The first day's hike takes you through the spectacular landscape of the Val d'Elsa valley with its open fields, vineyards, typical stone buildings and cypress-lined roads. You stay in Gambassi Terme which is beautifully situated on a hill with fine views over the surrounding landscape.

You continue your hike in beautiful surroundings along Via Francigena. Stop in Pancole before continuing to the villages of Collemuccioli and Pieve di Cellole. You finish in unique San Gimignano where you stay and have plenty of time to enjoy the city's charming medieval atmosphere.

Another fantastic and varied hiking day up and down the hills of Tuscany. You pass vineyards, olive groves, open fields and woodlands on your way to Gracciano. You have the opportunity to make a detour to visit the monastery Santa Maria a Conero.

Today's hike is a bit shorter and begins by taking you over Pieve a Elsa to the ancient Etruscan thermal baths at Caldane. Here you can bathe in water from a natural hot spring. You then continue to Strove with its beautiful Romanesque church. In the distance you can see the characteristic walls surrounding the medieval small town of Monteriggioni where today's stage ends. Your accommodation is located about 1.6 km outside central Monteriggioni.

Leave Monteriggioni behind for a final hiking day on this stretch of Via Francigena. You walk on gravel roads through Montagnola Senese which is a hilly landscape partly through woodland. You reach Chiocciola castle and then walk up to Poggio di Riciano or directly to Pina del Lago. At the end of the Renaissance forest you arrive at the beautiful city of Siena and meet the city via the ancient pilgrim gate Porta Camollia.
