Hiking in Engadin - Switzerland's pearl

Glaciers, turquoise lakes and alpine villages in Switzerland's national park

New

The Engadin is often called the pearl of the Alps, and it's not hard to understand why. Here, turquoise mountain lakes, glaciers, high peaks and larch-clad valleys meet in one of Switzerland's most beautiful alpine landscapes. You hike self-guided from Maloja through valleys such as Fex and Roseg, reach the panoramic Fuorcla Surlej pass and get really close to the Morteratsch Glacier and the Bernina massif. The finale takes place in and around the Swiss National Park, home to marmots, ibex and chamois. In the evenings, small alpine villages await with traditional stone houses, good food and Swiss order. Your luggage travels ahead – you only need to carry your daily essentials.

6 Breakfasts and 3 Dinners included

Welcome to Maloja, 1,803 meters above sea level and beautifully situated at the top of the Inn Valley. Here begins the hiking trip among the lakes and high mountains of Engadin. The artist Giovanni Segantini lived in Maloja and drew much of his inspiration from the landscape around Silsersee, Lunghin, and the Forno Valley. If you arrive in good time, there's plenty of reason to take a first walk and get a feel for the alpine air.

Level and accommodation

The hike runs mainly on well-maintained alpine paths without any particular technical difficulties and suits you if you have good general fitness and some hiking experience. The regular stages average 15 km and take 4-6 hours. The climbs vary between 400–950 metres of elevation gain. On several days the stage can be shortened using public transport or a lift.

Accommodation

You stay at comfortable 3-star hotels or equivalent. These are well-chosen accommodations rather than luxury hotels, and several are beautifully located in the small alpine villages along the route. Breakfast is included every morning and dinner is also included on several evenings.
