Hiking in the Bernese Oberland

From Lenk to Grindelwald with Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau

New

If Switzerland is the homeland of the Alps, the Bernese Oberland is one of its true gems. Here you walk straight through the Switzerland that made the Alps world-famous, following parts of the Via Alpina. Over an unforgettable week, you cross the Bernese Oberland from Lenk to Grindelwald, through blooming alpine meadows, green valleys and high passes with some of the Alps' greatest names alongside. Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau line up along the way, as do the turquoise Oeschinensee, the waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen Valley and car-free Mürren. The hike is substantial and made for those who enjoy long days and many meters of ascent. The reward is all the greater: high mountains, glaciers, Swiss wooden chalets and panoramic trails day after day. You stay in hotels and hike with a light backpack while your luggage is transported by car.

Dinner

Welcome to Lenk, a cosy little alpine town at the far end of the Simmental valley, with the Wildstrubel massif as a backdrop. You'll likely arrive on the punctual Swiss trains and then check in to the hotel in the middle of the village, where dinner is served in the evening.

Your hiking boots don't need to wait until tomorrow: if you arrive early, there are several tours at the foot of Wildstrubel, ranging from a shorter introductory walk to a solid first day on the trail. It's a great way to get your legs going and get acquainted with the landscape that will be your home for the coming week. If you want to make the most of your hiking trip in Switzerland, you can book an extra night in Lenk to tackle Wildstrubel at a relaxed pace.

Level and accommodation

This is both a demanding and rewarding alpine hike for experienced hikers with good fitness. The days are around 4–8 hours and follow mountain trails through forest, alpine meadows and high mountains, with several high passes and long descents. On average, this amounts to 16 km and 1,200 meters of ascent per day. Several passes exceed 2,500 meters, and snow can remain until early July. For safety reasons, this trip can be booked by a minimum of two participants.

Accommodation

You mainly stay in comfortable 3-star hotels with private bathrooms, often in classic Swiss alpine villages. In Griesalp, the accommodation is simpler and officially 2-star, but in Superior rooms. Most dinners are included, for convenience and cost control.
