Welcome to a coastal cycling trip with island hopping in Charente Maritime's beautiful archipelago. Here you'll find sand between your toes, fishing huts, delicious oysters and belle époque villas – all in a genuine French style.
Starting in historic La Rochelle, you cycle the beautiful La Vélodyssée route (Eurovelo 1) which faithfully follows the sea between Charente's historic seaside resorts. You also visit islands like Ré, Aix and Oléron where life goes at its own pace and fishing thrives. Via Côte Sauvage's pine forests you finally reach Royan which invites an extra night or two. It's also possible to visit Bordeaux after the trip.
The journey alternates between city pulse and quiet island life. One day you stroll between restaurants and small shops, the next day you roll through quiet nature reserves with salt marshes. In the evenings, cozy towns await where you can enjoy the local cuisine: seafood, potatoes from Île de Ré, grilled Charentais-style and of course the famous Charentais melon.
