Welcome to a short week with an unusually dense collection of everything that makes Provence Provence. You roll out from the papal city of Avignon across the island of Barthelasse, where the Rhône splits around orchards and narrow country roads, and continue on to the vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the rosé village of Tavel. Here, a refreshing glass awaits you after the ride. The first night you stay in Uzès, the dukes' city with stately stone houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. The next day, Pont du Gard awaits – an aqueduct built by the Romans 2,000 years ago and incredibly well preserved. Then comes Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where Van Gogh lived during his final years, and a climb through the Alpilles to the excitingly located cliff village of Les Baux before you freewheel down towards Arles and its Roman amphitheatre. Short, compact and generous – and for those who want more, there are extensions to Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie and out to the Camargue and the Mediterranean.

The trip begins right in the heart of Avignon, the medieval town on the banks of the mighty Rhône. Within the still-intact 14th-century city walls await the Papal Palace, the famous 12th-century bridge, and a range of museums and churches. Let yourself be swept into the maze of cobblestone streets and settle down at a café in one of the open squares, in the shade of the plane trees. Your French life for the coming days has begun!
Level and standard
Three cycling days averaging 60 km and 340 metres of elevation gain. You cycle on small country roads shared with cars, mainly in and out of towns. The climbs are manageable; the longest is a four-kilometre climb up to Les Baux. Suitable for those with normal fitness, and with an e-bike it becomes a pure pleasure trip.
The trip is offered in two accommodation standards. Standard provides simple but pleasant two- and three-star hotels. Charm means four-star hotels with historic character in Avignon and Uzès – in Avignon you stay in a former monastery – and three-star hotels with spa in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Arles. Breakfast is always included and luggage is transferred between hotels.
