Albania is a unique country and one of Europe's best-kept secrets. Here dramatic mountains with high peaks, deep valleys and wild untouched nature await exploration. After the fall of communism in 1991, the country opened to visitors, and the welcoming population makes the journey even more memorable. This exciting journey goes to the Albanian Alps, also known as "The Accursed Mountains", with the well-known national parks Theth and Valbona. You visit remote regions where agricultural life is the same as it has been for centuries. The harsh landscape, history and culture have created natural isolation through the ages – here memories of old blood feuds and rich folklore still live on.
You can choose between two programs: The one that includes Dobërdol goes highest and is suitable from June onwards as snow often remains at altitude before then. The second program works well from May onwards. It's days 2-5 that differ.

Hiking through the national parks Theth & Valbona
Europe's most beautiful ferry ride across Lake Koman
Hiking to glacial lakes & views towards Trekufiri
Through UNESCO-protected Gashi nature park
Charming villages and hospitality with homemade food

7 Breakfasts included
You land at the airport and travel approximately 30 minutes to our hotel in the capital Tirana. In the afternoon, there is a joint briefing where our local representative goes through everything you need to know before the hiking trip in the Albanian Alps. Afterwards, we recommend a city walk in Tirana and dinner at a traditional restaurant. The city straddles west and east, present and past, and is a stimulating experience.
The hikes are full-day and suitable for the moderately experienced hiker. The trails are good but a bit rougher in Theth and Valbona. Length and ascents are specified in the program. We include transfers to the most remote areas; a couple of stretches are on unpaved roads and the vehicles often lack seat belts. Luggage is transported by car or horse and you must therefore pack in soft bags.
You stay alternately in hotels, guesthouses and mountain lodges. The hotels are mid-range and have private bathrooms. You get your own room except for a couple of nights when you share with others (specified in the daily program). The mountain accommodations don't have elevators or air conditioning but offer much more local character and a warm welcome.
