The small island nation between Sicily and Tunisia is a sun-safe destination for hiking throughout the winter months. The environment is genuine and beautiful, especially on the main island's dramatic west coast and on rural Gozo, the hiker's own paradise island. Malta's history is fascinating and besides the Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs, the Knights Templar and the English have left their mark on the country's fascinating mixed culture. This is evident both in the beautiful cities and at the dinner table. The islands are most beautiful from October to May when everything grows abundantly after a long hot summer, and you avoid crowding at the clear water with its countless turquoise shades.

Fly to Valletta and take the short route to the island's heart and its Arabic capital. After checking in to your accommodation, you have time to explore Rabat and Mdina, one of Europe's best-preserved walled cities. The honey-colored stone facades, the winding alleys and the impressive fortress create a literally fairytale atmosphere, and the city has served as a backdrop for several films. Rabat, which continues outside the walls, is rich in both Roman and Christian remains, where the catacombs of Saint Paul are one of the city's main attractions.
The hikes are of easy to moderate level, with daily stages of 3–5 hours and an average ascent of 260 meters per day. The terrain varies between rocky coastal paths, old donkey trails and smaller paved roads. Short sections are steep and loose so hiking boots and preferably poles are recommended.
The journey combines three different accommodation environments that reflect the variety of Malta and Gozo. You'll first stay in Rabat at a personal boutique B&B with charm and historical atmosphere, close to Mdina and the city's evocative alleys. Here, days begin with breakfast in peaceful surroundings before the hikes take you out towards the coast.
On Gozo you'll stay both rurally and centrally. In the village of Gharb, a small, cozy accommodation awaits surrounded by open landscapes and village life at a slow pace – perfect for recovery after the day's hike. The last nights you'll stay in Victoria at a comfortable boutique hotel with proximity to restaurants, cafés and the city's pulse.
All rooms have private shower and WC, and breakfast is included every morning.
