When snow still lingers on the peaks and the rapids roar with meltwater, western Norway reveals itself at its most powerful. This trip is perhaps at its most magnificent in early summer but can be enjoyed throughout the summer half of the year. The journey takes you to Årdal, at the innermost part of the Sognefjord, where the mountains meet the water in a postcard landscape. Over five days, you explore the area in the best possible way, both on foot and from the kayak. You hike to the historic mountain farm Avdal, experience Vettisfossen – the highest free-falling waterfall in the Nordics – and paddle through calm fjord waters to secluded coves and valleys that few other visitors find. With local guides, good food, and comfortable accommodation by the fjord, this is an active trip that's perfect for those who want to experience Norway at its very best.

The journey begins with a beautiful bus ride from Oslo to Årdalstangen at the innermost part of Sognefjorden. Already during the journey you pass valleys, rapids and mountain landscapes that give a foretaste of the coming days. After check-in, a walk along Årdalsvatnet is recommended to familiarize yourself with the surroundings and enjoy the view over the fjord and the high mountains that surround the place.
The hikes take place on gravel roads, forest trails, and at times rocky mountain paths. The daily stages are relatively short but include several steep sections and some exposed parts. The kayaking portion requires no previous experience, but you should feel comfortable on the water. The kayak tour and one hike are led by a local guide. The trip suits those with normal to good fitness and some previous hiking experience.
You stay for four nights at a pleasant hotel on the shore of Årdalsvatnet, at the innermost part of the Sognefjord. The hotel has a restaurant focusing on local ingredients and offers comfortable rooms in classic Norwegian style. We rate the accommodation as Comfort according to Epic Trails' standard.
