It's exciting to think about all of you who are out cycling and hiking with us while we ourselves are sitting in the office. Epic Trails' world is vast and there's always something bubbling somewhere. That's why we thought it would be fun to celebrate our 20 years with a photo contest to capture some fragments of the mosaic of experiences we and you create together, every day somewhere out there.

There was a constant flow of images that dropped in during the Christmas holidays (more fun Christmas gifts than socks and paintings of Boden's fortress, for those of you who watched Karl Bertil Jonsson's Christmas). After wild voting at Base Camp Gothenburg we have agreed on three winners who are presented below.

1st place: The friendly giant

Photographer: Hannes Fellsman

We could organize a contest exclusively for mountain cows, given how many have chosen to depict these friendly giants. They can be found everywhere from the Alps to the Azores' emerald green meadows (this particular cow lives in the Dolomites). Not difficult to photograph, but Hannes captures the feeling of how time stands still when observing an animal in its natural environment. We think there's something especially calming about watching cows grazing or resting on the slopes. A lesson in just being.

Hannes wins a gift certificate worth 5000 kr for his expressive image

2nd place: The train in the mountain

Photographer: Tommy Jonzon

Spanien Andalusien Caminito del Rey Tommy Jonzon 1.jpeg

Tommy's image is taken from Caminito del Rey, a spectacular hiking trail through the Gaitanes gorge in Andalusia. All images from here tend to be dramatic, but the timing in capturing the train just as it shoots out of a tunnel, combined with skillful use of a foreground that gives depth (the red hiker), is masterful.

Tommy wins a gift certificate worth 2500 kr.

3rd place: The textbook example

Photographer: Kerstin Olander

In many ways it feels like you've seen this image before. It wins a prize for being a textbook example of how to take a hiking photo. Both the activity and the environment are included, and you're drawn into the image. Loads of want-to-be-there feeling. The image is taken on the coastal trail in Pembrokeshire in Wales.

Kerstin wins the last gift certificate worth 1250 kr.

Honorable mentions

Here are some favorites that almost made it all the way. Everything from magnificent views to happy faces, detail studies and wonderful moments after the trip - equally important for the complete travel experience that only a hiking trip or cycling trip can provide.
