Of several pilgrim routes that cross Italy with the eternal city Rome as the destination, Via Francigena is the most famous, the route that links Canterbury with the heart of Christianity. In Italy, the route passes through several regions from the San Bernardo pass in Valle d´Aosta via Lazio to Rome.
This section crosses southern Tuscany starting in historic Siena with its beautiful shell-shaped square. It also slopes in a way that invites people to stretch out almost like on a beach. From Siena you make your way through a very beautiful part of Tuscany filled with well-preserved medieval villages and small towns like Buonconvento, Montalcino, San Quirico and Vignoni Alto. Bagno Vignoni with its hot springs is one of the highlights. The rolling landscape with cypress-lined gravel roads, beautiful Val d´Orcia and the moon-like Crete Senesi make this historic hike an unforgettable experience.
