Terceira and Graciosa lie a little off the main Azores routes, and that's exactly the point. This short week, with great opportunities to tailor the days yourself, is perfect as a peaceful finale after a stay on São Miguel or the other islands, but works just as well as a trip of its own "off the beaten track." On Terceira, you stay in Angra do Heroísmo, the most beautiful city in the Azores and a UNESCO World Heritage site, where colorful chapels in honor of the Holy Spirit pop up in every village. A short flight away lies Graciosa, the white island. Here, time seems to have stood still: windmills, winding country roads, and a crater with a sulfur-scented cave you descend into via a spiral staircase. You hike from the crater rim down to the fishing harbor in Folga. Back on Terceira, you pick up a rental car and choose your own tour for the day, among black lava domes, volcanic bathing pools, and patchworks of stone walls. A lighter and shorter hiking trip in the Azores for those who want to discover the islands' more remote side.

Welcome to Terceira, the third island to be discovered in the Azores, hence its name. A private transfer meets you at the airport and drives you to your hotel in Angra do Heroísmo. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and perhaps also the most beautiful in the Azores, with harmonious architecture and most buildings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Terceira is a peaceful and rural island, but also the place where the Holy Spirit festivities begin on Easter Sunday. Faith is visible everywhere in the over one hundred impérios, small chapels in baroque or neo-Gothic style painted in bold colors. If you arrive before dinner, you can head up Monte Brasil, a volcano that rose from the sea after the island was formed, and look out over Angra Bay.
Level and standard
Easy hikes and plenty of free time. The trip's only fixed tour takes place on Graciosa. On Terceira, you choose from shorter tours between 1.5 and 3 hours. Mistérios Negros is short but counts among the island's more demanding trails. The trails are usually marked but can be rocky, so boots with ankle support and poles are recommended. Suitable for those with normal fitness. A driver's license is required for the rental car.
You stay at two hotels with sea views. In Angra do Heroísmo, the hotel is located by the water, within walking distance of the city center and close to Monte Brasil, with a pool and garden facing the sea. On Graciosa, you stay at a smaller hotel by the harbor just outside Santa Cruz, in rooms with sea views. All rooms have a private bathroom, and breakfast is included.
