The Azores are nine volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic, and on this trip you'll manage four of the most beautiful. You start and end on São Miguel, the green main island, where the crater lakes lie like mirrors in old volcanoes and the ground steams in Furnas. In between, you fly out to Pico, where Portugal's highest mountain rises 2,351 meters out of the sea and the grapevines grow in small enclosures of black lava stone. The ferry takes you onward to São Jorge, a narrow and steep island that lies in the sea like a ship. Here you hike down to the island's fajãs, fertile spits of land at the foot of the cliffs that some villages can only reach on foot. Finally, Faial awaits with its vast crater rim and Capelinhos, where an eruption in 1957 built new land out of the sea. Domestic flights, ferries, and transfers are included for smooth island hopping, and almost every day there's a swim within reach.
Good to know: The daily program may need to be adjusted according to the ferry schedules.

The trip begins in Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, the Azores' largest island. A transfer takes you from the airport to the hotel in the middle of town. Depending on when you land, you might have time for a first stroll through the archipelago's lively capital: narrow cobblestone streets with black-and-white patterns, elegant churches and the city gates facing the harbour, where the marina opens up toward the Atlantic. A gentle start to life out at sea.
Level and standard
Moderately challenging hikes averaging 11 km, with about 340 m up and 590 m down per day and between 2 and 5.5 hours of walking time. Several hikes start high and end at the sea, so it's the knees rather than the lungs that have to work. The summit hike on Pico is the trip's big challenge, with 1,100 m up and down over lava and volcanic rock, accompanied by a local guide. If you'd rather skip it, easier alternatives are available. The trails are often marked but can be rocky, so boots with ankle support and poles are recommended. Suitable for those with good fitness.
You will stay in five locations. In Ponta Delgada, a modern city hotel awaits right in the historic quarters, with a pool and spa. On Pico, you'll stay centrally in Madalena at a hotel with a pool, close to the harbor and the vineyards. In Velas on São Jorge there will be smaller accommodation, in Horta a room with a sea view, and in Furnas a smaller hotel with a pool and a view over the valley. All rooms have a private bathroom and breakfast is included.
