Just a couple of hours' train ride from the palm trees of Nice lies Mercantour National Park, one of the most untouched parts of the French Alps. You start in La Brigue, a village with colorful facades that was Italian until 1947 and where food and dialect still blend across the border. After a warm-up among the olive trees, you move up to the alpine village of Castérino at just over 1,500 meters. Here you are surrounded by 3,000-meter peaks, still lakes, alpine meadows, prehistoric rock carvings, and wild animals that watch over the hiker. You hike through the "Valley of Wonders" to Refuge des Merveilles and through the Fontanalba valley. You have the chamois and the ibex as company, and in the evenings you can stretch your legs at the inn after a day in an Alps that has a truly distinctive flavor.
The trip is easy to extend with a few well-deserved nights in the lemon city of Menton with its lovely beaches - ask us.

5 Breakfasts, 2 Lunchboxes and 3 Dinners included
The train from Nice winds its way up through the Roya Valley and drops you off in La Brigue, near the Italian border. The village has centuries-old stone houses with colourful façades, and until 1947 the Italian flag flew here. The valley retains its own blend of French and Italian in language, food and culture. Take an evening stroll among the alleys and soak up the atmosphere, poised between the Mediterranean and the Alps.
Level & standard
A hiking adventure for those accustomed to alpine terrain. The tours average about 14 km with 700 meters of elevation gain. The trails are clear and well-trodden but often rocky, and some climbs are long. Hiking boots with ankle support and poles are strongly recommended. Bring plenty of water, as there are few refill points. Early in the season, snow may remain at higher elevations.
You choose between two levels. With Standard you stay at simple and personal inns with private bathrooms, where it's easy to get close to both the village and the hosts. Comfort gives you a nicer accommodation in La Brigue and a cozy, higher-class alpine inn in Castérino, a lovely place to land after the day's hike. Dinners in Castérino are included in both levels and can be added in La Brigue. Luggage transport is not needed as you bring your own luggage on the bus between La Brigue and Castérino.
