"Imagine skiing in the morning and swimming in the sea in the afternoon!" An old expression that is true here, but we suggest a journey on foot where the landscape's striking changes develop slowly. The hiking trip starts in Mercantour National Park, which despite its proximity to the Riviera constitutes one of France's wildest mountain environments. Here you are surrounded by 3000-meter peaks, still lakes, alpine meadows, prehistoric rock carvings and wild animals that watch over the hiker. Down through Val Roya you gradually encounter olive trees, high-altitude villages and winding trails. Via Sainte-Agnès, the coastal village at 800 meters above sea level, you hike straight down to the lemon city of Menton and a swim with your boots on - as tradition dictates at the end of the long-distance trail GR-52.
This trip is an Epic Trails original and you won't find it anywhere else. Unlike simpler variants, you get the complete experience from mountain to sea, with better accommodations and many dinners and transfers included.

The journey begins with a train ride deep into Val Roya, which stretches from the blue Mediterranean to the ski slopes at Colle di Tenda pass on the border with Italy. From Tende or Saint-Dalmas, a transfer bus runs during season to Castérino. Outside the June–September period, private transfer is arranged when needed. The small village of Castérino lies at just over 1500 meters altitude and is a perfect base for the coming days in Mercantour. Here the few houses are surrounded by fresh alpine meadows, forest and promising peaks.
A moderately difficult hiking trip for you with normal to good fitness. The terrain varies between alpine trails, terraces with olive trees and coastal mountain paths. The elevation gains are manageable but some days are long. Rocky terrain occurs and good hiking boots or shoes are required, as well as plenty of water as there are few refill opportunities.
We have selected the nicest hotels and guesthouses in the area. In Casterino you stay at the alpine cozy Chamois d'Or (golden chamois) with a small Spa. Near Sospel you stay at La Chapelle St Gervais, a farm that once belonged to a Knight Templar and is located in extremely beautiful and lush surroundings. In Saint-Agnès you stay at the simple but also unique and family-run Hotel Le Saint Yves, with restaurant and sea view from above. In Menton we have chosen Hotel Lemon, a colorful and fun place near the center and beaches.
