Walking Via Francigena - Siena to Acquapendente

Day 1: Arrival in Siena

Arrival in Siena and check in at the hotel. If you arrive early, enjoy a visit to the city, famous for its "Palio" horse race, held in the most beautiful shell-shaped square in Europe: Piazza del Campo. Don't miss a visit to the Duomo, an architectural treasure and many impressive medieval palaces. History comes alive as you wind through the narrow streets of this wonderfully preserved jewel of Italy.

Day 2: From Siena - To Lucignano d'Arbia - 21 km, +307m/-467m

After breakfast you begin your wonderful hike along the Via Francigena through the Tuscan landscape. You walk through agricultural landscapes whose color palette varies from green and yellow during spring and summer to ochre during autumn. You pass through the small medieval village of Cuna just a few hundred meters before entering the town of Monteroni d'Arbia, with its famous water mill. The final part of the hike leads you to the fortified village of Lucignano d'Arbia, along its characteristic cypress-lined entrance.

Day 3: From Lucignano d'Arbia - To Buonconvento - 14 km, +259m/-293m

Today you walk through a hilly landscape in the heart of Crete Senesi, an area covered with clay that never ceases to amaze. With its distinct gray tones it feels like you're walking on the moon. Today's destination is Buonconvento, one of the most beautiful small towns in Italy and you stay just outside at an agriturismo with fantastic views over Crete Senesi and the Val D'Orcia valley.

Day 4: From Buonconvento - To San Quirico - 21.6 km, +500m/-400m

Today your journey takes you towards San Quirico, over gravel roads and some paved ones: these will however be compensated by the beautiful views over Val D'Orcia, among hills toned with charming shades and scattered with vineyards and cypresses. In San Quirico you will stand enchanted before the portal of the Collegiata and try to recognize the different architectural styles that blend into its decorations, before enjoying a rest among the green hedges of Horti Leonini, a garden from the 1400s.

Day 5: From San Quirico - To Castiglione - 9 km, +200m/-300m

You will continue your journey over the fantastic views of Val D'Orcia: just beyond San Quirico you enter a timeless world when you visit Vignoni Alto, and you will be able to enjoy a refreshing rest in the thermal water of Bagno Vignoni, with its unmistakable pool in the middle of the large square. Today's second pearl is Castiglione, in the heart of Val d'Orcia, which you will pass near when you travel over one of the most beautiful panoramic sections of the entire Via Francigena.

Day 6: From Castiglione - To Radicofani - 21 km, +900m/-300m

Today you will test your strength with a short but demanding part of your journey that takes you as far as Radicofani: but it will be worth it, to admire the view from Radicofani fortress, tired but satisfied, it will repay all your efforts. You will also be able to visit Pieve di San Pietro, a small jewel dating from the 1200s, and take an evening stroll in its old town center and admire the magic of the illuminated fortress.

Day 7: From Radicofani - To Acquapendente - 25/31 km, +516m/-972m

The last day is also a long full-day hike. A short transfer (included) takes you to the square in Radicofani. The impressive castle Rocca dominates the entire valley and offers magnificent views over the Tuscan hills and Monte Amiata. The view over the landscape this last hiking day is breathtaking and gives you strength all the way to the final destination Acquapendente.
