Volcano Hiking in Sicily

From Catania airport you can take bus or train to Milazzo or Messina where you board the boat that takes you to Lipari. It is also possible to book a private transfer from Catania airport to Milazzo/Messina.

Accommodation on Lipari

Hike A - The southern peak and Mount Guardia - 11 km, +470 m/-470 m
This varied hike on the southern part of Lipari, with wonderful views over the island of Vulcano, starts in the lively town of Lipari which has an impressive castle as well as a very interesting archaeological museum.

Hike B - From Acqualcalda to Canneto - 5 km, +350 m/-350 m
You take a local bus to Acquacalda where you begin your hike that takes you from one beach to the other through green Mediterranean vegetation. Enjoy the panoramic view from the highest point (346 m above sea level) before you descend to the island's most famous beach - Canneto. From here you take the bus back to Lipari town.

Hike C - From Quattropani along the western coast - 14 km, +586 m/-950 m
Take the local bus from Lipari town to Quattropiani where you start this very varied hike that goes along the western coast, the wildest part of the island. After walking with beautiful views over land and sea you reach San Calogero with its thermal baths which are said to be the oldest in the Mediterranean region. From here you continue back to Lipari town.

Hike D - Circular hike on the island of Vulcano to Gran Cratere - 5.7 km, +290 m /-290 m
The island of Vulcano is a unique little island where you walk up through a lunar landscape to the large crater which is yellow-colored due to the sulfurous smoke it emits. From the top you have magnificent views over the entire island and its archipelago. The descent goes along a green slope that contrasts strongly and beautifully against the blue sea and the dark gray cliffs. If the hike to the summit is closed you can choose another route from Capo Grillo back to Vulcano harbor, this involves a hike of about 12 km. 

Hike F - The island of Salina - Hike from Rinella to Malfa - 9 km, +430 m/-430 m
The island of Salina with its magical, timeless atmosphere is just a short boat ride from Lipari. From the harbor on Salina you take the local bus to Semaforo of Pollara where the hike along the western coast begins. It is a challenging stretch with ups and downs, but you are rewarded with wonderful views over the sea and nearby small islands. The hike ends in Rinella from where you take the local bus back to the harbor on Salina and the boat back to Lipari.

Hike G - Circular hike Panarea Island - 7 km, +425 m/-425 m 
The island of Salina with its magical, timeless atmosphere is just a short boat ride from Lipari. The hike goes around the entire island and passes through the ridge of the old volcano. From there you have 360° views over the entire Aeolian archipelago. Along the way it is possible to make a detour to the famous prehistoric village.

After breakfast you have a transfer to the harbor (included) from where you take the boat over to Stromboli. From the harbor on Stromboli your luggage is transported to the hotel while you walk through the narrow streets and alleys with their whitewashed houses.

One of the most spectacular hikes on this trip is the one on Stromboli because its volcano has constant eruptions. You hike on your own up to 272 m above sea level where you can see the lava flow called "Sciara di Fuoco". This hike is open to everyone and is normally always feasible.

Today you travel on your own by boat from Stromboli to Milazzo and then continue by train or bus to Taormina. You have the entire afternoon to explore this charming and lively town that began to be built in the 3rd century BC and which is very beautifully preserved.

After breakfast you have a transfer (included) to Piano Provenzano where you begin a guided hike and explore Mount Etna. The hike goes around the volcano's slopes and gives you the opportunity to enjoy the charm of the surroundings as you walk along lava flows, caves and lush vegetation. A packed picnic lunch is recommended. After the hike you have a transfer (included) back to your hotel.
